Balanced Literacy Framework
 
 
 
The Balanced Literacy Framework is a compilation of methods used to teach reading and writing. This year our school is working to implement the reading components of this program. In future years, we will work to implement the other parts of the framework.

This framework was developed by Fountas and Pinnell. Teachers are excited to begin the journey. Through out this process, we expect to not only know our students strengths and weaknesses better, but to create plans to encourage the strengths and work on the weaknesses.

Components:

The Interactive Read Aloud :  Students listen to a book read by a teacher. During the reading, teachers stop and have student discuss parts of the book. Teachers may use this time to teach comprehension strategies or reading skills. It is important to note that teachers are using the story to teach skills and are not teaching that specific story.

Shared ReadingStudents read a common text together chorally. They are working on skills such as fluency, phrasing, or other presentation skills. Teachers may also use these selections to teach content area material, grammar and punctuation, or phonics skills. Again, the focus is on teaching skills and not necessarily the specific item that is being read.

Independent ReadingStudents will have time during class to read independently. Studies show that reading success is directly related to time spent reading. While students are silent reading, the teacher will be working with small groups of students differentiating instruction.

Guided ReadingWhile students are working at stations or silent reading, teachers will work with students by reading books at their specific level. By gradually increasing the level of difficulty, teachers can more effectively increase students’ reading levels. Grouping of students will change as student needs change.

Other Components:

Writing :  Students will write daily. Teachers will conference with students during writing to create goals with the student. Small groups may be pulled for a focused lesson.

Word Study:  Students will be studying spelling patterns. Students will study vocabulary in context.

Interactive Writing :  The teacher and students will complete writing activities together. During this time, the students and teacher will share the marker. Many skills can be taught with this method such as sentence structure, spelling patterns, phonemic awareness, etc.
